"And if we want to achieve our goal then let us empower ourselves with the weapon of knowledge and let us shield ourselves with togetherness and unity." Malala Yousafzai
The annual Arby L. Hambric Scholarship was created on July 7, 2014 (the birth date of his mother Gussie) as a neighborhood effort to honor the sacrifice and life risking efforts of people. People like his momma who finally had the opportunity to graduate from high school at the tender age of 79 years old. Proceeds from the sale of Mr. Hambric's book, To Thee I See: From picking in the fields of Texas to cooking for dignitaries on U.S. Navy ships, a journey I wouldn't change, will go towards the ALH Scholarships.
We seek and give consideration to a person and a higher consideration for veterans who show a financial need, have overcome obstacles, worked to improve their communities, and who are often overlooked by traditional scholarships. One hundred percent of the ALH Scholarship fund will be used for scholarships and other programs designed to encourage students to pursue a higher education. Applicants must have completed at least one semester of school and maintained a 2.0 GPA. No more than $5,000 will be awarded per student. Applications and three letters of recommendation must be submitted and sent to www.totheeisee.com no later than June 7th. Recipients will be notified on July 7th via certified letter. Funds will be transferred to the campus bookstore to cover the cost of the textbook(s) or to the specified educational institution designated by the recipient.
